The MOT test, a legal requirement on vehicles older than 3 years, covers a wide range of factors to do with your vehicle safety including the condition of your tyres through to seatbelts and wipers. Generally, there are some everyday checks you can do to your vehicle which would increase the chance of it passing, these include:

• Check operation of and for any blown lights
• Check your tyres meet the minimum legal requirement of 1.6mm of tread across 3 parts of the tyre.
• Your wipers are working with washer fluid in the tank
• No broken glass on the vehicle
• The horn works
• The registration plates are in good condition

There are also a wide range of things that should be checked on your vehicle, to which you may not know how to check, including:

• The exhaust system and emissions
• Electrical wiring and battery condition
• General vehicle structure including chassis
• The fuel system
• Steering & suspension

If you have a puncture, we can offer a puncture repair instead of having to buy a new tyre. The repairs will mean you can extend the life of your tyre though it is important to not run flat on any deflated tyre as this may mean we cannot offer a repair.

Mis-aligned wheels can decrease the life expectancy of your tyre. Over the months and years of driving, all cars and vans will have mis-aligned tyres by varying degree’s meaning, that your tyre will be scrubbing on the road, decrease the life expectancy due to increased wear and tear. Improperly inflated tyres will also suffer this problem so checking your tyre pressures is also key alongside a wheel alignment.

If you think you may have a problem with your exhaust, it is important to get it checked out straight away. Symptoms to look out for with a problematic exhaust include:

• Rattling – if you hear a rattling noise from your exhaust, this could indicate a loose bracket holding the system in place.
• Roaring – if your car sounds like it is “roaring” and you have a different, louder tone from your car, this could indicate a potential problem with the silencer or a corroded exhaust system.
• Hissing or popping – this could indicate that part of the exhaust system, either the pipe or muffler, has corroded and/or has a hole.

If you can see rust or holes in your exhaust system, it is advised you get this checked out as it could indicate a problem.

Even though seeing blue or white smoke might indicate a direct problem with the exhaust, it could indicate a problem with your engine:

• Blue smoke – this could indicate a problem with the engine as this is a sign of unburnt oil getting into the exhaust.
• White smoke – this is normal when you first start your car, especially on a cold day but if the smoke continues to show, it could indicate a problem with your coolant system leaking. Depending on where the leak is, determines how serious the problem is but, you should ask us to check it out for you.

As with all strange noise, rattles and shakes with your car or van, it is important to get it checked out early to avoid any further, and more expensive damage to your vehicle. With exhaust systems, it is especially important as a broken exhaust could mean a build-up of dangerous gasses inside the car/van.
